Case study · Shopify rebuild

Sodastream

A full Shopify rebuild for a global sparkling water brand, in partnership with The Pantry Club – built for bundles, subscriptions, and a first-of-its-kind cylinder exchange programme.

Maverick has understood Sodastream’s unique challenges and has been able to tailor solutions to ensure the Sodastream website is competitive on a global stage.
Craig Naude, Managing Director, Sodastream

The brief

Sodastream, owned globally by PepsiCo, is a household name in South Africa. Through a partnership with The Pantry Club, the Sodastream team came to Maverick with a website that had fallen behind the brand: outdated, slow to update, and never built for how the product actually sells – as syrup bundles and as recurring cylinder exchanges, not one-off purchases.

Without a bundling system, the team was manually stitching together promotions and losing the upsell that should have been automatic. And without a cylinder exchange programme built into the site, customers had no clean, trackable way to swap empty CO2 cylinders for full ones online – a core part of how the Sodastream model works, and a gap that was costing repeat business every month.

‍

What we built

We rebuilt Sodastream on Shopify, starting with the product architecture. Every machine now lives on a dedicated page template – hero imagery with a colour and variant selector, live pricing, a “What’s in the Box” breakdown, a feature-icon list, an extended description, an FAQ accordion, and a “Get More Fizz” upsell module that pushes flavours and cylinders straight from the machine page.

Bundling was handled two ways: simple combinations such as syrup multi-buys run as native Shopify discounts, while more complex machine-plus-flavour-plus-cylinder bundles launch shortly – giving the team flexibility to bundle without manual promo stitching for every campaign.

The cylinder exchange programme required its own logic. Because exchange orders behave differently to standard purchases, we built conditional messaging into the post-purchase flow so customers get the right instructions depending on whether their order includes an exchange cylinder.

On the fulfilment side, we integrated directly with The Pantry Club – SKUs linked, barcodes mapped, and post-purchase customer communication routed through Pantry Club’s WhatsApp-first notification system, with SMS fallback, rather than standard Shopify email.

Delivery is location-aware from the first click. We built location mapping into the site so it shows customers, at every touchpoint, whether Sodastream delivers – and whether cylinder exchange is available – at their specific address, tying directly into The Pantry Club’s delivery and exchange network. No guessing whether the service reaches them; the site says so upfront.
